Red Twigged Dogwood
There are many
forms of Red Twigged Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera, C.s.'Kelseyi',
C.s.'Isanti')and they all contribute striking color accents
to the Winter garden. Pick the appropriate size for your garden space and
use either as a single specimen (seen here surrounded by Winter-blooming
Hellebores and Winter Hazel), or as a broad swath of massed display. They
are especially dazzling when planted in areas where snow stays on the ground.
In Oregon, where my garden tends to be predominantly green during the Winter,
the red twigs always get me into the holiday mood! I also use the cut twigs
for basket-making, combined with grape vine branches. It's natural habitat
is along stream banks in moist areas.
