it dictates behavior and even thought in the measure to which we are responsive to it."

About the Designer:

Every part of the world has distinctive features that identify it. These features of native materials, native plants, architectural styles, terrain and weather, define that place. A 'sense of place' is recognizing these characteristics and preserving what is special. I feel that this is an important element in creating an authentic landscape.

Fine Art has been the focus of my education and young life. Frequent outings to the Philadelphia Art Museum and visits to the galleries and museums in New York helped to develop an active interest in the world around me. My paintings and drawings at that time were of landscapes displaying the characteristics of the Eastern States architecture and landforms. After graduating with a BFA from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia I embarked on a career designing accessories and in 1990 I came to Portland to work at a small accessories company.

Travel has always been an important part of my life and I love to discover those things; architectural details, plant silhouettes and landforms that characterize each place I visit. Exploring the Pacific Northwest with my native Oregonian husband has been the inspiration that led to my completion of the two year certificate program at Portland Community College in Landscape Design.

I am interested in working with clients who savor a 'sense of place' in their environment and want to honor it by learning about the natural and cultural history of this place we call home.

I am currently a member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD), The Oregon Chapter APLD Board, Association of Northwest Landscape Designers (ANLD), The Hardy Plant Society, and Hoyt Arboretum.

On Garden Sculpture:

The use of art in the garden brings advantages to a landscape. It offers a contrast to the living plants; establishes a focal interest; brings a personal aesthetic; and can add color, movement and even sound to the garden

Some years ago I developed a series of sculptures based on architectural shapes. My medium at the time was paper. Currently my interest lies in adapting those same shapes in concrete. It will be a process and exploration of a new medium resulting in exciting shapes and colorful containers for the garden. I will keep you posted on my progress.
